My cousin and her husband recently moved into the farm house that my father was raised in and have begun remodeling and updating. The house was built in 1820 by Allen Foster Furman, Generation #2 of the Mehoopany Furmans. Allen is a great x5 uncle of mine. The point of that background is this, that house is Old.
When work began on the cellar they discovered two unmarked boxes full of a mystery fluid. Each bottle was caked in a thick fuzzy coating of dust. It was quickly determined that no one is really sure what it is in them or where it came from. My Aunt believes that by Grandfather acquired the bottles years ago in some undetermined fashion, which is strange, but believable enough.
We cracked one open and passed around a glass to brave onlookers in an effort to determine what the contents were. My take - it was Mead. Very sweet, very strong. Several others believed it to be an attempt at some type of fruit wine, perhaps peach.
I recapped the bottle and brought it home for further study. Stay tuned for further developments.
